Did the Detroit Lions blow it by not using the Franchise Tag on Ndamukong Suh?
Well yesterday was the NFL's official deadline for teams to place their Franchise Tag on a player to keep them as a player for the team for the upcoming season while they hoped to agree to terms with the player on a long term deal. It can be a bit of a gamble for the player will make an incredible amount of money for the upcoming season and there is no guarantee the player will sign a deal to remain longer than the one year Franchise Tag deal. There were a few surprises but none more than the Detroit Lions deciding not to place their Franchise Tag on DT Ndamukong Suh! Other notable players who didn't receive the Franchise Tag were: WRs Randall Cobb, Jeremy Maclin, TEs Julius Thomas, and Jordan Cameron.. But none was more surprising than the Lions choosing to allow Suh to test Free Agency. Granted the Lions would of been on the hook to pay Suh $26M + for the upcoming season and they would have had to restructure the contract(s) of Calvin Johnson and possible Matthew Stafford to keep him. Ndamukong Suh is the Bill Laimbeer of the NFL, every team hates to play against him but every team would love to have him as a teammate! This is truly a gutsy move by the Lions and I am sure not an easy one for them to of made. On one hand, signing Suh would of kept probably the best Defensive Tackle and second best Defensive player outside of JJ Watts and kept the Lions DL intact and one of the top Defensive Lines in all of football.together but would of left little money to sign other Free Agents. In my opinion, any team that would sign Ndamukong Suh would be getting a truly great player at his position but they would also be busting their salary cap in doing so. A few NFL teams have allot of money to use this year on a great player or two but for most, they would be in the same position that the Lions were in with Suh! A great player is just that, he is a great player, but one player doesn't make up a team, and one player cannot win enough games each year without a great supporting cast around them! It looks like a few teams out there are willing to cut enough players to free up the salary cap space it will take to sign Suh but will they be jeopardizing the rest of the team to do so. With only so much money allotted to each team under the salary cap, there is only so much money to give each player and to pay a player such as Suh the reportedly $25M + a year he is seeking will give a team a great player at his position but sacrifice so much more around them. In the Lions case, they should of signed him last year when they could of, instead of waiting for this past season to play out and watch Suh have a truly great year! Lions fans are truly disappointed and angry with the Lions, for all along since the season ended, the Lions top brass gave every indication to their fans that either a deal would get done or that they would use the Franchise Tag on Suh. Instead, the clock is ticking for the Lions and they have less than a week to get a deal done with Suh and as each day passes it gets less and less likely that this will happen. The Lions had their best record in over 20 years this past season and now fans and sports pundits can only wonder what the Lions organization was thinking and what was the rational behind this not so popular decision they made in regards to Ndamukong Suh. Time will tell if this was a good decision or just another in a long line of very questionable decisions the Lions have made in the past years that have made the Lions the laughing stock of the NFL. The NFL Draft hasn't been the best to the Lions in recent years, it has been their Free Agency acquisitions that helped this team to get good in a short period of time. Tic Tock, Martin Mayhew and the Lions top brass, You are on the clock , to get an Ndamulong Suh deal done!!!! @cupofjoeinthed
