Both the Kitten Bowl and Puppy Bowl warmed the hearts of everyone as kittens, cats, puppies and dogs nationally were adopted and the sponsors reached record viewers to promote their products while only paying a fraction of what a Super Bowl commercial cost ($5M for 60 second commercial).
In a Super Bowl that saw numerous records broken and almost another incredible comeback by the New England Patriots, we now have yet another NFL team that finally won its 1st Super Bowl. The Philadelphia Eagles are the Super Bowl 52 Champions. In all, 17 records were broken and 12 records were tied in an offensive explosion between the Eagles and Patriots. Of those 29 records, seven of them were personally tied or broken by Brady. The 505-yard passing performance broke a record that Brady just set last year against the Falcons. QB Brady also extended many of his career records. In eight Super Bowl games, Brady has racked up more career passing attempts (357), completions (235) and passing yards (2,576) than any other player in Super Bowl history. Brady also has more Super Bowl passing touchdowns (18) than any other player in NFL history.
With the nonstop offensive fireworks on Sunday, the Patriots and Eagles managed to combine to break multiple records. The two teams set the Super Bowl record for most combined total yards (1,151) and most combined passing yards (874). The 1,151-yard total actually represents the most yards in any NFL game, including the regular season and playoffs. Another record broken was that only Philadelphia punted the ball once and New England not once. The two teams also set a unique record that might not ever get broken: most failed extra points. The Eagles and Patriots failed on a total of four PAT conversions in the game, with each kicker missing one extra point and each team missing one two-point conversion.
The Philadelphia Eagles won their 1st Super Bowl playing behind backup QB Nick Foles, who as he had done all throughout the Playoffs was nearly flawless and made tough throws when needed. In all, Foles threw 3 TD's and caught another one. In what might be the greatest play call in NFL Super Bowl history, on a 4th and goal from the Patriots 2 yd. line, the Eagles ran a trick play that ended up with a backup TE Burton, throwing a perfect pass to a wide open QB Nick Foles just before halftime. QB Nick Foles was chosen MVP of the game. Foles stats for the game were: 28/43 for 373 yards, 4 total TD's with one interception. The Eagles racked up over 160 yards on the ground. The defense which was one of the top defenses during the season was torched for over 600 yards by the Patriots high octane offense but when they needed a big play, it came late in the 4th quarter on a forced fumble by Brady on a bull rush. The turnover and subsequent FG gave the Eagles an 8 point lead with just over a minute to play in the game. Rookie place kicker Jake Elliott was 3/3 on FG attempts. Philadelphia is primed to be the team to beat again next season and will have a good chance to repeat as Champs. A dynasty could be brewing in the city of Brotherly Love.
On the other side, the New England Patriots were seeking their 6th Super Bowl win and came within a Hail Mary throw of doing so. Behind another record setting performance from this seasons MVP QB Tom Brady, the Patriots just came up short and for all intents and purposes, the window of Domination may have closed shut on New England. The bounces and calls that usually go New England's way, went to the Eagles instead and the little things that make the Patriots stand out were nowhere to be seen in this game. The Patriots will lose DC Matt Patricia, as he will be the new Head Coach of the Detroit Lions. Josh McDaniels, the OC of the Patriots had agreed to become the new Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts but got cold feet and decided to stay with the Patriots. The 2017 season was anything but harmonious for the Patriots. Between the reported rifts between Brady and Belichick and Kraft, especially in the decision to trade QB Jimmy Garappolo around mid season. The trade forced the Patriots to keep Brady as their QB for their have no one in the wings to be their next future long term quarterback. The other big question is, how much longer will Belichick coach in the NFL and with the Patriots?
Also, in a very strange move that cost New England dearly in the Super Bowl was the benching of starting CB Malcolm Butler. This move of replacing Butler with CB Eric Rowe who was burned repeatedly by the Eagles receivers was a huge reason why New England didn't win its sixth Lombardi Trophy. Butler was on the field for almost 98% of the Patriots defensive plays during the season and was visibly upset before the game started and after the game said " they gave up on me and if I had been in the game the outcome would of been very different".
So are times changing within the Patriots? Will Free Agents still want to play for New England? Is the "plug and play system" that Belichick invented still work with a new OC and DC coming in? Can the rift between Brady and Belichick and Kraft be repaired? And finally, is this the last time we see the Patriots in the Super Bowl for years to come?
Lastly, not only was I taken back by NBC being able to charge $5M+ for a 30 second commercial airing during the Super Bowl, but I was also equally taken back by how bad the commercials were this year outside of maybe a few of them. If I am the companies who paid big dollars to make these commercials and then paid NBC a stupid price to air them, I would fire these ad companies immediately for these commercials were bad, very bad to say the least! Winners were Tide, M&M's, NFL, Doritos / Mountain Dew and Alexis.
