This past week has been a trying week that has tried the Souls and Beliefs on many around the Greater Metro Detroit Area! There were 3 Major Stories that stand out about many that unfolded around us:
1.) The Sentencing of Convicted Cancer Doctor Farid Fata - after 4 grueling days of expert testimony and victims and victims family speaking at his sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Paul Borman handed down a sentence of 45 years to Mr. Fata. The sentence was one that Judge Borman felt fit the crimes as appropriate as could be despite how horrific they were. The sentence in all reality mounts to a death sentence for a man ailing from severe diabetes and even with good time Mr. Fata could get while in Federal Prison, He would be around 90 years old before He would ever see a day outside a prison again. There wasn't going to be any sentence that Judge Borman handed down that would be able to satisfy everyone. The defense wanted a 25 year sentence while the Prosecutor's and Victims and their Families wanted a maximum sentence of 175 years. I am sure part of the reasoning of the 45 year sentence is that if Mr. Fata decides to appeal, an appellate judge will look at the sentence as very reasonable in light of all the circumstances of this case! The greed and abuse of his medical power was overwhelming to say the least and over 550 victims were abused and tortured by Mr. Fata so he could get rich off of his victims who some were sick and some were not sick at all. But also let's not forget that Mr. Fata was reported to the State of Michigan years before on possible medical abuse of patients and the State at that point said they found no evidence of any wrong-doing . He was also reported again months before all hell broke lose again on possible medical abuse of patients and again the State of Michigan investigated and found no wrong doing! It was only after the FBI was contacted and a whistle blower lawsuit was brought against Dr. Fata did action finally take place. The State of Michigan failed the victims on at least 2 separate occasions and who knows if the State did what was right the first time, if any of the patients and victims could of been saved and not have been tortured at the hands of Dr. Fata. What disturbs me is not once have I heard the State of Michigan step up and admit they dropped the ball badly on this case and have changed their procedures and trained their investigators to know what to look for going forward. Also , how much compensation will these victims and their families receive? I am hearing pennies on the dollar. The State also is standing behind a law signed by then Gov. John Engler that limits the amount of monies victims can recover by insurance companies in cases like this. I am sure the insurance companies who are the biggest lobbyists in the State of Michigan were behind this law and they recoup their losses first before the victims will ever see a penny in reimbursement. It is time we tell our State Legislature to change this law and protect the victims of cases like this instead of the greed of the Insurance Companies getting all the money!! These victims and their families have suffered enough from what Mr. Fata did and compensation is all that can be offered to them shouldn't be limited to what the insurance companies and a law meant to protect the insurance comapnies allows. Time to change the law Gov. Snyder!!!! Hopefully this will start the process of Closure for all the Vicitms and their Families and in time they can move on from this terrible tragedy.
2.) Missing 9 year old Omarion Humphrey found dead in Lake - a tragic loss of life. An autistic boy wanders off on the 4th of July around 9 pm from a family gathering and isn't seen again. The family and others frantically look for the boy for hours and the police and sheriff and others mobilize in support to help with finding the boy. For over a week, hundreds and hundreds of volunteers search many miles around the park and divers repeatedly search the lake at the park without finding the boy. Finally, a swimmer finds the boy in the water as they are swimming. This lake was searched over and over for days and no one could find the boy. The boy was with a foster family and I am sure both the foster family and the boys paternal mother are in great distress and grief from this terrible news. As if this was not enough, the Sheriff has now turned over the case to the Prosecutor for possible neglect charges against the foster parents! When is enough enough? There has been enough heartache and suffering for all with this tragedy!!!!
3.) Judge jails kids in Bitter Divorce - In a long drawn out and very bitter divorce and custody battle, three kids have been caught in the middle of this battle and Oakland County Family Court Judge Lisa Gorcyca jailed the three kids for a few weeks in a Divorce case that now has drawn National and International attention for what she did to the kids. First off, these kids are the victims and are being punished for the foolishness of the parents. Both parents are doctors and refuse to meet halfway on anything. Both parents are guilty of many wrong doings in regards to the kids with the father moving to Israel while this is all going on and a mother who has been called manipulative and brain washing. But putting aside all the pettiness of both parents, it is these 3 kids who were punished for their parents misgivings and sent to the Children's Village by Judge Gorcyca. I am sure she is a fine judge, but I have to ask, why weren't the mother and father made to be present in the Judge's courtroom with their respective attorneys and the Judge hold the 2 parents who are the adults in contempt of court,, told to go into a conference room and work out all the details and if they and their attorneys didn't after all this time has been wasted in the divorce case, then the Judge should of made the decisions as to what was best for the kids instead of placing them in jail for weeks and possibly harming them for life? It seems that neither of these parents are willing to budge at all and their attorneys keep filing briefs with the court one after another. If the parents can't do what is right for the 3 kids in this battle then it is time for the Judge to make the tough decision as to what is best for the kids no matter how tough it is! The kids are the victims here not the parents! The Parents are the adults and it is time for the Parents to be the Adults and do what is right! If not, I ask for a Family Court Judge to step up and stop the foolishness of the Parents and their Attorneys and put the Kids first!!!! @cupofjoeinthed
