My weekly review post of Sports and My Thoughts as they pertain to the "D" and Beyond for the week ending Saturday 4.11.15 . This was a week filled with all sorts of drama and ups and downs. In the "D":
Lions: Have signed a few other FA's and retained a few from last year. They added 2 good FA signing this past week in CB Josh Wilson and also LB Brandon Copeland to bolster their defense. The Lions are deciding whether to match the tender offer to George Johnson that the Buccaneers extended to him earlier this week, it is 3 years for $9M. They have also been bringing in some of the college guys that they are interested in possibly drafting this year. With the NFL Draft less than 3 weeks from now, it is crunch time for the Lions to decide what their glaring needs will be for this upcoming season.
Red Wings:The Red Wings have made the NHL playoffs for the 24th consecutive year, the longest current streak amongst any of the major sports leagues. Although down the stretch they have looked lackluster and coughed up the puck allot and have had very shaky goaltending, the Wings hope to have a healthy squad ready for the 1st ground of the playoff which start mid next week.
Pistons: The Pistons will finish the season missing the playoffs once again. This is a team that is very young and lacks major NBA talent. They lived and died by the 3 ball, couldn't play defense if their lives depended on it but did give allot of effort for the most part and played hard too. Coach VanGundy will have his hands full during the off season for He has to make decisions on some of the younger guys and see who is also available in the FA market. He will also have to figure out a way to mentor and teach the younger players to play defense and mold them into NBA caliber players which does not seem to be his true strength as an NBA Coach. Only time will tell how good this Team may be next season.
Tigers: The Tigers have gotten off to a real fast start early on this season, They are currently 4-0 and scoring runs at an alarming rate of 7.5 runs per game. There is no doubt they might have the best offense in all of baseball but it is the pitching that could be suspect this year. Three pitchers are currently on the DL and they are Verlander, Rondon and Nathan. It is still early but defensively they are vastly improved and are a faster team stacked with power and hitters of average. Lets see how they progress the next month or so to see how good this team could potentially be this season.
Spartans: Tom Izzo led the MSU Spartans to the Final Four where they were beaten by the eventual Champions, the Duke Blue Devils. A great year for the Spartans in both basketball where they finished ranked #7 and also the football team which finished ranked #5. The Spartans have become a powerhouse in both Collegiate basketball and football.
Wolverines: The Wolverines had Spring Football practice and an estimated 60,000 fans attended. There is allot of optimism in Ann Arbor as new Football Coach Harbaugh tries to restore the glory of the once great U of M Football Program.
Sports beyond the "D":
NFL: Free Agency seems to be winding down for the most part with NFL Teams
now concentrating on the NFL Draft in less than 3 weeks. Meanwhile still no answer from the NFL on "DeflateGate" that is now almost 3 months old! The NFL fined and also took a draft pick(s) from the Falcons for pipping in noise during games when the visiting team was on offense. They also fined Ray Farmer (GM) of the Browns for illegally texting during a game but chose not to impose loss of a draft pick(s) for this offense. Also still have AP suspended even though he apologized and fulfilled his legal obligations as well. Greg Hardy also was charged with domestic violence but allegedly paid off his accuser and the Prosecutor had to drop the charges. Hardy then signed a huge deal with the Cowboys and is eligible to play immediately. The NFL has chosen to look the other way and once again takes a Black Eye for giving out punishments as they see fit that do not fit the offense or their Owners are not good friends in Goodell's good ole boy fraternity.
Baseball: The first week of baseball is under way and teams are just finding themselves and positioning themselves for the long grueling 162 game season. Some teams have jumped out of the gate playing great and others are still winless and looking for answers. Someone please tell me how Josh Hamilton doesnt get suspended for repeat of drugs but Santana gets 80 games? Oh that's right , we have MLB Players Association to thank for this stupidity!
NCAA: A special note, My heartfelt prayers and thoughts go out to Lauren Hills family for their loss of a very special and gifted daughter who lost her courageous battle with cancer the other day. May God comfort all who knew her and give them strength and courage in this time of loss. And also to all who lost loved ones and friends in the plane crash after the NCAA Final this past week. May God look after all those in need and comfort them as well. Collegiate Baseball and Softball are underway with the Championships to be decided in a few months. March Madness is over and Spring Practice for football is now happening all over the country with college football fans trying to determine who will be the starters on their colleges teams and how good they might be this upcoming season.
NBA and NHL:The playoffs are almost settled with both the NHL and NBA playoffs starting with a week. It is a chance for the lower seeds to upset the high seeds and both will crown a Champion in late June.
NFL Draft Day: Less than 3 weeks to see who gets drafted and by which NFL team, the draft starts on April 30, 2015
NFL Season: Starts in a little over 4months on September 10, 2015.
