Week 12 of the College Football Season was the second to last weekend of college football before the Conference Championship games and then the debate begins on who will be the Top 4 teams in the collegiate football playoffs and who will be left out. Already there has been much discussion as alway,s as the rankings came out this week and had the following 4 teams in order for the CFB Playoffs. There are; Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Clemson, and Oklahoma. Questions surround as to how Miami leapfrogged Clemson into the #2 position, when they needed a comeback late in the game to beat an average at best Virginia football team. And how Oklahoma is ahead of an undefeated Wisconsin team. There is no doubt that the selection committee has a tough job, but one has to wonder just how impartial the members can be? No doubt they have their allegiances to certain teams and conferences and no matter what anyone says, the almighty $$$ also comes into play as the top 4 teams get a boat load of money to play in these games.
There are only a few unbeaten teams left and mostly because they have not played the toughest of schedules this season but still they are undefeated after week 12. They are Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Wisconsin and UCF. All but UCF are in Power 5 Conferences and even if UCF stays unbeaten and wins their Conference Championship, they will not get into the CFB Playoff discussion. And Wisconsin which played a very soft non conference schedule may very well pay the price for doing so. Just as the Badgers do with the Basketball team the football team followed suit and now may be on the outside looking in when all is said and done. All they can hope for is a loss or 2 by the teams ahead of them and they must win out convincingly in their last game against Minnesota and put up allot of points and win big over Ohio State in the B1G Conference Championship. Even doing this, they need allot of help and losses from the teams ahead of them in the rankings.
So Week 13 is upon us and the CFB Playoff picture and teams want to be the top 4 or if not to make sure they are in the top Bowl games that have the highest payouts for them. This past weekend we saw again how immature Oklahoma Sooners QB Baker Mayfield is and continues to be and yet the school wants us to think they are being so hard and unfair to him in doling out a punishment of stripping him of his captaincy and not allowing him to start the game as their QB. Lets be perfectly frank and clear here, Oklahoma is not fooling anyone with this condescending slap on the wrist. The punishment does not fit the crime! This is not the first time he has done something stupid and foolish and yet the Sooners sent out the wrong message again. The punishment should of been one that finally would send not only Mayfield a stern punishment, it should of been one that let everyone know this should not be tolerated at all. But as it is nowadays, this comes down to money and prestige. Oklahoma is in the 4 team hunt for the CFB Playoff and there is no way they would not let Baker Mayfield play in this game. The correct punishment should of been a minimum of a one game suspension, if not the rest of the season but Oklahoma and also the coach have to answer to their alumni and boosters. Winning is the only thing that matters anymore and money is the root of all its evil. It is time for the NCAA to find its backbone and when a school does not address what is becoming a huge problem with their college football and basketball teams, they need to step in and hand down the discipline that is needed. We can't expect Colleges to do the right thing anymore when all that matters is wins and making money for the schools.
We also have learned as the coaching carousel in the CFB has started, once again schools refuse to do the right thing when it comes to showing respect as they fire a coach. This time it is Texas A&M and they have decided to fire their Head Coach, Kevin Sumlin, but not today or after the season but right after their game with LSU on Saturday. Teams might as well start to hire and fire coaches via social media. This past week, we also seen UCLA part ways with their head coach Jim Mora. So as the carousel starts in motion, we will once again see many coaches fired and the rush to hire a teams next coach, but not in a timely and vetted and thought out process, but in one that they throw crazy money at another coach that is usually still coaching another team and also one that is usually preparing for a bowl game. And finally discussion about the worst thing, is that the NCAA does not allow student athletes to transfer to another school immediately to play, just as a coach is allowed to, but the NCAA penalizes them with a mandatory 1 year sit out. So the NCAA needs to address some issues that surround the game but also need to move their rules into the 21st century.
