My weekly review post of Sports and My Thoughts as they pertain to the "D" and Beyond for the week ending Friday 11.6.15 . This was a week filled with all sorts of drama and ups and downs. In the "D":
Lions: The Lions after a lackluster uninspired performance in London against the Chiefs came home to many questions swirling around the Franchise. On Thursday, Martha Ford, Owner of the Detroit Lions cleaned house by firing long time President Tom Lewand and GM Martin Mayhew as the team coming off an 11-5 season last year is 1-7 this year and with the way they are playing will be lucky to win another game or two. For now Coach Jim Caldwell is safe, but Mrs. Ford served notice that she will not tolerate losing anymore.
Red Wings: The Red Wings opened the season on a 3-0 note but then were saddled with injuries and bad play and now one month into the season are 6-5-1 and are in 5th place in their Division. The Red Wings are riding a 2 game winning streak and hope to build on it as they play thru the injuries and the younger players get more experience throughout the season. Scoring goals will be a major concern for the Red Wings this season.
Pistons: The Pistons started the season 3-0 and are currently 3-1 so far into the young NBA season. Already the Pistons have suffered a big injury to Jodie Meeks who broke a bone in his foot and will be out until at least February. The Pistons will be up and down this year and it will all come down to defense and how well they respond to playing the most back to back games of any NBA team this season.
Tigers:The Tigers start the off season looking at needed pitching pitching pitching and more pitching and it is the first off season for new GM Avila who has big shoes to fill with the departure of Dave Dumbrowski. In order for the Tigers to get competitive again within their own Division, they will need to be big spenders in this off season.
Spartans: The Spartans Football Team remains undefeated and #4 in the Country and are coming off their bye week. They hope to have some of their starters back who have been injured most of the season so far. The goal of the Spartans is to win out their remaining games and stay healthy as to get a Playoff berth in the 4 team National Title Playoffs. In Basketball, Tom Izzo and his Spartans look to repeat another great season and have eyes on the NCAA National Championship as well.
Wolverines:The Wolverines escaped with a last second win at Minnesota last week. It was a must win game for the Wolverines but also showed some holes in the defense and even more questions with the offense. This week should be an easier game for them as they play Rutgers. Michigan's goal is to run the table and win out an that includes winning the last game of the year against the Buckeyes.
Sports beyond the "D":
NFL:
The NFL continues to have a Black Cloud over it, as once again the
Officials caused the outcome of a game to be called into question as
none of its officials in the game made a call that was suppose to be
called and it cost a team a potential winning touchdown. This has become
the norm as in a playoff game last season the Officials also blew a
call that cost a team a win. The NFL seems to do what they want when
they want for the NFL is a money making machine that makes the Owners
money hand over fist! The NFL also needs to stop being patsies when it
comes to dealing with the NFLPA and needs to put very detailed strict
consequences to an offesne or violations by players or teams that are
not negotiable! There needs to be a fair and just disciplinary agreement
that stops the NFLPA from going to federal Court every time they want
to but also deals with the violations in a fair and timely manner!
MLBaseball: Baseball is over and the World Series Champions are the KC Royals who won in 5 games against the NY Mets. The off season officially has started and FA will begin. Look for the richest contracts to be signed this off season and many players will be on new teams for the 2016 Baseball season..
NCAA: The biggest news was last weekend happened in Columbus, Ohio where QB JT Barnett was arrested for OVI. Barnett who is underage was caught driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Coach Urban Meyer and AD Gene Smith gave Barnett nothing more than a slap on the wrist and a 1 game suspension as they downplayed the seriousness of the incident. The School by their actions showed everyone they do not care about the integrity of the school or the student athletes but only care about its sports programs and winning. I think this showed potential recruits and their parents just what OSU is all about and sends the wrong message that do wrong and if your an athlete once again to will get special treatment! The
NCAA seems to becoming more and more than nothing but the oversight of
college athletics that just collects money. The NCAA investigates
allegations and violations and hands down punishments and disciplines
which most of the time are against athletes for a team violation or
potential violation for taking money or making money and the NCAA
suspends the athlete at its will which is wrong. There needs to be a
defined detailed process for these issue. On the other hand a College is
charged with violations and it is stripped of scholarships and maybe a
playoff suspension depending on what the violation was, but then the
College usually challenges it and the NCAA backs down. SMU and its Coach
Larry Brown were handed down a punishment for violations of NCAA rules
and SMU is no stranger to NCAA wrong doings and now they want to
challenge the discipline. Syracuse and its head B Ball Coach Jim Boeheim
want to challenge his 9 game suspension because he now wants to have
his discipline compared to what the NCAA gave to Larry Brown even though
the suspension of 9 conference games for Jim Boeheim was nothing more
than a slap on the wrist for the transgressions that occurred under his
watch at Syracuse. He should of been suspended at least 1 year for what
happened! And now just this week it has come to light that an assistant
coach at Louisville under Head Coach Rick Pitino hires escorts to have
sex with players and recruits for 5 years. If this is true, the NCAA
should make an example of Louisville and show the other Universities it
means business and penalize the Basketball program for 3 years taking
away scholarships and give them a post season ban and possible removal
of the head coach as well. It is time to let everyone know that even as
athletics have taken over as big business at the college level the rules
and regulations have to be followed and if you break them they are
serious consequences that will be instituted.
NBA and NHL: The NBA and NHL seasons are underway and I will be updating them as the seasons progress.
